Presence (noun) pre-ze-n(t)s – “The state or fact of existing, occurring, or being present in a place or thing” or for a person.  Presence is the essence of showing up.

In a meeting when I accepted my first call in ministry, I asked my predecessor, “What is the most important thing I should remember as a college chaplain?”  He said unequivocally, “Show up.”  I did.  I went to football games in the dead of winter, recitals for musical instruments I could not pronounce nor appreciate their sounds, concerts, and disciplinary counseling sessions.  As well, I was present to officiate the weddings of former students who played outrageous sports and instruments and who sometimes made bad decisions.  It would follow that presence is more than its physical expression.  It has impact and meaning that affirms our shared humanity.  Like the disciples and those gathered in the Lukan version of Jesus’ triumphal entry into Jerusalem, struck by his presence, they could not keep silent with their praise.  They had encountered the divine and they shouted Hosana! Hosana!  Blessed is the one who comes in the name of Lord.   Blessed are we who through the Ministry of Reconciliation, have the collective capacity and will to affirm the holy and the divine in all of God’s children.  Your gifts to Reconciliation Ministry Offering allows Disciples to show up, speak up, and stand up on behalf of those who need our voices to proclaim that God’s justice and mercy are present with us and available to all of us.
